The film · The Peaceful Eating Way™

One episode. Three Trances. Twenty-three minutes.

The teaching, the way I'd give it across a table. Watch it once, slowly.

Sound on. Twenty-three minutes. Best watched alone.

The seesaw, in six lines

There's a Part of you that eats. I call it the Indulger, and it works through one of three Food Trances. Most people have two.

Comfort

Starts with wanting. You know what you want. A case gets made, and the case is good. You eat it. It tastes good. Guilt comes after.

Escape

No wanting. No case. Something got too big, and food turns the volume down. You barely taste it. You're right there — taste just isn't the job.

Rebellion

Starts with a rule, often one you made yourself. Something in you refuses to be governed. The eating is the revolt.

Every Trance has an opponent: the Food Controller.

It makes the rules, sets the plan, decides what tomorrow looks like. After the food is gone it changes roles — it stops planning and starts prosecuting. The Controller tightens. The Indulger releases. The Controller comes back harder. That's the seesaw. It isn't weakness. It's physics, and it does not run out of energy on its own.

One practice. Ten minutes.

Go back to one episode. Not the whole day — one, specific enough that you could say what room you were in.

The question isn't how do I stop the Indulger? Pushing on that end of the seesaw is what the Controller has done your whole life. The question is what was happening in the hour before.

  1. Name the Trance: Comfort, Escape, or Rebellion. Just name it.
  2. Ask it directly: what were you trying to do for me? Then listen.
  3. Ask: what was happening an hour before you got here?
  4. Write down what comes.

You are not trying to fix anything today. You're trying to be the first person who asked.

Where this goes

None of these Parts is your enemy. Every one of them is protecting something, even when its strategy costs you. That's why this work is not a better set of rules — a better set of rules is just a more articulate Controller. The Peaceful Eating Way™ is where insight becomes skill: twelve weeks, with me in the room, learning to meet whichever Part shows up — not just the one you named today.

I've taught Internal Family Systems for fifteen years — the last ten of them focused on food — and more than seven thousand people have done this work with me. I don't think anything is wrong with you. I think you have two Parts who've never been in the same room.
